As part of its 50th Anniversary celebrations, The Rotary Club of Windsor and Eton decided to explore the possibility of forming an evening Rotary Club in Windsor, as a special Club Project.

The inaugural meeting of the Rotary Club of Windsor St. George was held on 29th June 1982 at the Castle Hotel, Windsor.

The Club was formally Chartered on 23rd November 1982.  Rotarians John Handcock and Don Sawyer, (the ten District Extension Officer), together with H.R.H. The Prince Philip and The Dean of Windsor accepted the Club'sinvitation to become Honorary Members.

Following the Club's Charter, members set about the task of establishing the Club in the local community and, the first major link with the Windsor & Eton Operatic Society was formed in late 1982.  The first Charity Gala performance to place at Easter 1983 and has continued to this day, with several members of the Royal Family attending as Guests of Honour, including Her Majesty the Queen Mother, the Princess Royal and The Earl and Countess of Wessex.

Honorary Member H.R.H The Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh, has been a tremendous supporter of the club since its charter and was the officila guest at the Charity Gala (Turandot by Puccini) in 1985 and last vistited the club in 2006.

The link with the Rotary Club of Goslar Nordhanz in Germany was formed in 1984 and, visits between Goslar and Windsor have taken place annually.  Support has been given by each Club for various pojects.

Amongst early fund-raising events was an Angling Competition at Virginia Water and a massive raffle, held at Windsor Safari Park by The Rotary Clubs of Windsor St. George and Windsor and Eton, togther with the local Rotaract Club, which raised over £20,000 in aid of the Rotary Polio-Plus Campaign.

In 1989, the first Festival of Christmas Music, organised by Rtn. Ossie Williams, took place in Eton College Chapel.  This annual event is now held in Eton College School Hall, with many celebrities - including Jill Dando, Cilla Black, Hannah Gordon, Gloria Hunniford, Sir Cliff Richard and Sue Baker - acting as the Presenters.

The first Paul Harris Fellowship was awarded to Rtn. John Fido in 1993 and, since its inauguration, the Club members have either received or awarded 20 Fellowships.

Members of The Rotary Club of Windsor St. George subscribed to the portrait of H.R.H The Prince Philip, which hangs in the Guildhall, Windsor.

To celebrate the Club's 21st Anniversary in 2001, a dinner was held at the Royal Adelaide Hotel, when past and the then current members and their guests attended.  To date, Rtn. John Fido is the only member who has been President on two occasions.  In 2002, th Club assisted with the organisation of the Rolls Royce Parade, which was reviewed by H.M. The Queen and H.R.H. The Prince Philip at Windsor Castle in April and, later in the year, organised the Ox Roast at Bachelors' Acre - where there is a ceremonial plaque - as part of the celebrations marking H.M. The Queen's Golden Jubilee.

The following year, the Club secured a matching grant for Water Wells in Mkuranga, Tanzania.

During 2004, our first lady member, Judith Diment, was inducted and was our President during our 25th Anniversary Year 2007-08.

The Rotary Club of Windsor St. George has organised and participated in many and varied fundraising and community based events during its 25 years, including the Schools' Music Festival, sponsoring Voluntary Service Oversees, Ambassadorial Scholars and, more recently, the formation of the Woking Together Group.  Thsi involves the two Windsor Rotary Clubs, the Rotary Club of Slough, the Inner Wheel Club of Windsor and Eton and Soroptimists International on Windsor, Maidenhead and Slough.  The Group holds an annual dinner in the winter and a river cruise in the summer for local senior citizens.

In latter years, the club has been involved in other Community projects such as Stroke Awareness Day, stewarding for the Christmas Lights Switch on and Reindeer Parades and the Annual Windsor Fireworks display at the Royal Windsor Racecourse.  In 2008 the club played an important part at the Royal Windsor Tattoo where it was the first point of contact for the visiting spectators.  This major Winsdor Event is now scheduled as a annual event in our Rotary calender.

This is an abridged history of the Club, as it has been impossible to include all the events which have taken place.

To date the Club has raised in excess of £200,000 from which some 200+ charitable organisations and individuals have benefited.
